Why Ryanair cancellations fall squarely under EU law
Ryanair is an EU-licensed airline (Ryanair DAC in Ireland, alongside Malta Air, Buzz and Lauda Europe). Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 therefore applies to every Ryanair flight departing from an EU airport, and also to Ryanair flights arriving in the EU from a non-EU country such as the UK, Morocco, Turkey or Albania. In practice, almost the entire network is covered.
When a flight is cancelled, the Regulation grants two separate and cumulative sets of rights: a refund or re-routing on the one hand, and fixed compensation of €250 to €600 per passenger on the other. Many travellers accept the first and never claim the second.
The amounts: €250, €400 or €600 by distance
Compensation does not depend on the ticket price or on how inconvenienced you were. It depends only on the great-circle distance between the departure airport and your final destination:
- €250 for flights of 1,500 km or less (e.g. Dublin – Paris Beauvais, Rome – Marseille);
- €400 for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and for all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km (e.g. Manchester – Seville, Bordeaux – Marrakesh, London – Tenerife);
- €600 for flights of more than 3,500 km outside the European Union.
Because Ryanair operates short and medium-haul routes only, the vast majority of claims settle at €250 or €400. The €600 band applies solely to rare long non-EU routes. The Canaries, Madeira and the Azores are EU territories, so even those long sectors are capped at €400.
The decisive test: notice given less than 14 days ahead
Compensation is payable only if the cancellation was notified to you less than 14 days before the scheduled departure date. A schedule change announced three weeks in advance — a common occurrence in winter programme adjustments — entitles you to a refund or re-routing, but not to the fixed sum.
Keep the cancellation email or SMS: its send date is the single most important document in the file. Be careful with cancellations relayed by an online travel agent — what matters is when the information was actually made available to you.
Fast re-routing can halve the payout
If Ryanair offered you an alternative flight and you reached your destination with only a limited delay, the airline may reduce compensation by 50%. The thresholds are: under 2 hours' arrival delay for flights of 1,500 km or less, under 3 hours for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights of 1,500–3,500 km, and under 4 hours beyond that.
Conversely, if the replacement flight got you to your final destination 3 hours late or more, the full amount remains due. If you gave up the trip altogether, you are entitled to a full refund of the unused ticket in addition to compensation.
When Ryanair can legitimately say no
The airline is released from liability if it proves the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances it could not have avoided even by taking all reasonable measures. Typically accepted:
- weather incompatible with safe operations (storms, dense fog, heavy snow);
- air traffic control or airport handling strikes, i.e. events outside the airline;
- airspace closures, political decisions or instructions from authorities;
- security or public health risks, and bird strikes.
By contrast, a technical fault on the aircraft is in principle inherent to the normal exercise of an airline's activity and does not exempt the carrier. The same applies to crew rostering problems, operational decisions and overbooking.
Strikes by Ryanair's own staff
Ryanair has experienced repeated industrial action by pilots and cabin crew. The Court of Justice of the European Union has held that a strike launched by an airline's own staff, including one called by a trade union, belongs to the normal management of the business and is not an extraordinary circumstance. A cancellation caused by internal strike action therefore generally remains compensable — unlike one caused by an air traffic controllers' strike.
Don't overlook the accompanying rights
On cancellation, the airline must offer you a choice between a full refund of the unused ticket within seven days and re-routing under comparable conditions, at the earliest opportunity or on a later date that suits you. If you face a long wait, meals, accommodation and airport transfers must also be covered. Where you paid out of pocket, keep every receipt: those expenses are reclaimed separately from the fixed compensation.
Building a strong file
- Booking confirmation showing the flight number and reservation reference;
- the cancellation email or SMS, with its date;
- evidence of the outcome (refund, replacement flight, ticket bought elsewhere);
- boarding passes and invoices for expenses incurred;
- a screenshot of the reason the airline gave, if any.
You have up to 3 years to claim
Cancelled flights can be claimed up to 3 years back, so an October 2023 flight is still actionable today. Claims are handled through amicable channels: a formal request to the airline, then, if needed, a referral to the competent national enforcement body.
